Details

UNSW (University of New South Wales)'s research faculty was an outlier in the UNSW site, having not been updated in many years and lacking the visual application of their new design system. Compounding this issue, 7 other research-adjacent sites had been created that needed to be retro-fitted into the main site.

UNSW partnered with Merkle to:

  • Create a new IA, combining all sites

  • Redesign the full research faculty section

  • Create new components to be ingested into their design system

  • Test with industry-facing users to validate the efficacy of the design solution

A New IA based on customer needs

UNSW’s research faculty’s IA was strained from years of internal-facing thinking, causing 7 other satellite sites to be built independently.

Our goal was to bring these satellite sites back into the main nav and to reposition the content to be industry-facing.

Through user interviews with industry participants & card sorting exercises we were able to realign the IA to appeal to this audience. We also worked in collaboration with UNSW to identify, cut and rework content on the other sites in order to bring them into the main nav. The result was a concise navigation that presented UNSW as an industry partner while also catering to the needs of UNSW’s internal teams.

My Role

As the Design Lead on this project, this role included:

  • Helping the client to ‘sell in’ the new vision for the site

  • Assisting the client in convincing their teams to support the design solutions

  • Managing the client relationship

  • Managing the team to create high quality outputs

  • Conducting user interviews and testing

  • Collating and creating a new IA

  • Developing high-fidelity designs

  • Identifying and realising new scope opportunities

    Due to my relationship with key clients, we were able to extend the scope significantly and have built an ongoing pipeline of work with UNSW.
